Bone on bone was the sound that Jouannest required from the piano--skeletal--a man on the edge of a breakdown dragging his dead friend through sleeping Paris to bury him with noone to help.

Bone on bone is what was gotten since Galás' left hand had just received unforseen surgery so it was like a claw of knives attacking the nine-foot Steinway piano she had demanded. It was curious how it emphasized the horror of the piano writing of Jouannest-- Like a skeleton coming across rocks whilst being dragged along and continuing to be dragged until the grave.

DANCING IN THE DARK performed by Diamanda Galás, voice and piano (Composed by Moman/Penn, Published by Screen Gems EMI Ltd) From Clive Barker's BEING MUSIC 1999 SONGBOOK SERIES Recorded and mixed by Blaise Dupuy 1994

Diamanda Galás was asked to record an interpretation of the Moman/Penn DANCING IN THE DARK by Clive Barker, for the end-titles of his film LORD OF ILLUSIONS in 1994. The point of Clive's extraordinarily eclectic album is that he uses music which inspires him emotionally when he paints at night. It is rare to hear Fred Astaire, Rachmaninoff, She Who Must Be Obeyed, Stephen Sondheim, Judy Garland, let alone Diamanda on the same music program. BEING MUSIC contains 16 such tracks.

"When [Galás'] recording first came in, the production offices came to a halt while I played it, over and over, astonished at Diamanda's sheer creative courage. It's an audacious rediscovery of the power and darkness in the lyrics of the song, which seems to suggest that the lovers are dancing at the End of Things." Clive Barker, from BEING MUSIC 1999, the album of music that inspired a book of over of Barker's 150 paintings.

ORDERS FROM THE DEAD receives its second incarnation by Galás' Greek brothers ROTTING CHRIST. Sakis Tollis, who is the composer and producer of the band, is from Epirus, which, like Mani, is a primary home of the death lament in Greece. Sakis' orchestration of his powerful band and the Epirotean female singers he chose takes ORDERS FROM THE DEAD into a different place than the original and Galas likes that. "It should be different, rather than the way it was originally." Galás performs original text and that of the great Anatolian Greek writer Dora Soteriou--in English and Greek, and collaboration of now the three different Greeks--Galás, Soteriou, who was the witness in Smyrna, and Rotting Christ, whose recording illustrates the terror of war, including genocide, slams back the Smyrnaic Genocide into the faces of the doubters, revisionists and anti-Greeks in America, Britain, and Turkey. Greeks have always documented their history with the zeal of those who know they have only centuries, and now, decades, left before extinction.

For Galás, ROTTING CHRIST's request to cover ORDERS FROM THE DEAD is a further testimony that her efforts and those of all Greek, Assyrian, and Armenian Genocide activists will not be silenced by the Turkish/American/British and Israeli power conglomerate. When DEFIXIONES received its premiere in Los Angeles it was not reviewed, although there were scores of journalists there. When its completed version was premiered in the UK and in Australia all major papers condemned Galás for performing the work in the original languages in which it was written, Greek, Armenian, Assyrian, and Turkish. About Rotting Christ, Diamanda has said, "My brothers have come. My brothers have come." Like the Greek boat her father's relatives saw while fleeing the Turks on the shores of Smyrna, Sakis appeared and said, "May we join you, sister?"

Diamanda has never performed ALL THE WAY in public. This live recording of Diamanda Galas on voice and piano was done in NYC at CMS rehearsal studios in February 2006. It was the first and only take. Blaise Dupuy used vocal distortion and short delays on the piano, at Diamanda's request. Postproduction and mixing was done in February 2010 by D E F in Paris. Diamanda and D E F enjoy a long-distance working relationship where each settles in for a 48 hour patch and D E F's mixes go back and forth from Paris to NYC. "It is like being alive," Diamanda states.

The photo is the Wolfmoon, taken by Richard Morrison on January 29 2010. When Diamanda first saw it, she felt it had a lot in common with her decades' long interest in this song as an all or nothing anthem. With hovering Mars making the Moon ever brighter, we at Intravenal Sound Operations feel that ALL THE WAY speaks for us. There is no greater love than that which burns us and then passes without remorse.

THE BLACK CAT

"Galás' rendition of 'The Black Cat' is as intense an excursion into the ambiance of homocidal insanity as one is likely to encounter this side of a jail cell. Even more gratifying to Poe scholars is the fact that Galas groks Poe's bizarre but highly disciplined mentality. GK Chesterton said that madhouses were not stocked so much with empty-head people as with people who think too much" -- Michael A.Hoffman, Amazon.com

O DEATH PERFORMED LIVE BY DIAMANDA GALÁS, VOICE, AND IMPERIAL CONCERT GRAND AT THE ALL TOMORROW'S PARTIES FESTIVAL AT CAMBER SANDS. Recorded in November 2006. Live mixing by Blaise Dupuy. Post-production and final mix by D E F. Photo by Richard Morrison. Font: Alamgir

This legendary performance, done at the invitation of Mars Volta, is unparalleled by any soloist since Jimi Hendrix. Period. Voice and piano are one ax. Forget singer-songwriters. This is a new tradition for voice and piano that has never been heard before and never will again.

The festival tech crew noticed there was blood on the keyboard after her performance. Galás said, " Yeah, it felt right, that show. Probably broke a few fingernails. Nice night."

Jazz writers and blues writers cannot hear her music as directly contributing to their research, although they will one day, but the Greeks can hear the amanes singing that fronts the work -- making it close only to Ethiopian singing, which combines the inheritance of Byzantium from the Greek and Coptic churches with the Blues, as Galás does here.

For Galás it is a natural inheritance of a Greek Egyptian/Smyrnaic and Maniate blood – and an American homeland.

Critics, take note. Study. This is the Professor. Her father and Johnny Otis would be proud.

Diamanda Galás' cover of Gloomy Sunday is currently the most famous and infamous interpretation that exists. It is currently world-renowned, and inexplicably banned in Thailand, which amuses Galas, since she suggests it must be the only thing there that is banned.

This performance is from Galás' concert in Paris in the Spring of 2008 at Theatre La Villetté

"If there is anyone in our....era closer to being judged as a modern " classic," I don't know who it is. [Galás] is one of the most original artists musical culture has produced in the last thirty years."--Mark Grant, New Music Box, 2007
