EL SOL DE ZACATECAS

April 2, 2007

A Brilliant Appearance by Diamanda Galás

By Rafael de Santiago

Zacatecas, Zacatecas – With an ethereal atmosphere…under a black metallic structure with lines of light that illuminated with the rhythm of Diamanda Galás’ piano; the sole instrument that accompanied a voice that emanated melodies, sounds of grievance (in at times, guttural moments)—but at the same time a beautiful song and a learned soprano that reached the highest of notes.

With a half-hour delay, which she explained was due to missing technical equipment, Diamanda added that her three day stay in Zacatecas had won a part of her heart, for being so well-received during her stay here.

A young audience delighted over the magnificent execution of this woman’s piano playing, this resident of New York, descended of Greek parents. Operatic interpretations charged with jazz and blues…those who watched were enchanted by this concert of international excellence.

It’s also worth noting that at the end of the concert one was able to buy the artist’s work, including visual works made by the artist herself, as well as her recorded material.

A night punks will never forget.
