Diamanda Galas
has requested that the upstairs bar
be closed for the duration of her performance, which is an excellent
idea as it keeps away all the people who aren't really interested
in a solo vocals and piano set. The sizeable crowd which remains
is transfixed by blues and soul interpretations that showcase the
avant-garde torch singer's astonishing range, from imperious low
croon to vibrating high notes that rattle the spine. Her dramatic,
discordant keyboard work turns 'Long Black Veil' into an ominous
tour de force, while a mesmerising 'Dark End Of The Street' proves
she's just as powerful when playing it straight.
